GAIL collaborates with GSG Impact to strengthen Impact governance in multiple jurisdictions across Africa
The Global Alliance of Impact Lawyers is excited to announce our partnership with GSG Impact, through the Africa Governance Project, a six-month initiative running from September 2025 to March 2026. This collaboration brings together our community of impact-focused lawyers with GSG Impact’s mission to accelerate the growth and support the robustness of the impact investing ecosystem across Africa.
What is the Africa Governance Project?
This collaborative project focuses on strengthening governance structures that underpin the impact investing landscape. It has three key workstreams that will engage with the Impact ecosystem across multiple jurisdictions, including in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.
How GAIL is Collaborating With GSG Impact
GAIL’s role is to bring impact governance expertise, to embed an impact lens in governance and legal design. GAIL has established the GAIL Impact Governance Group (GIGG), a group of senior legal and governance experts drawing in experience from across the world, to provide Impact-focussed legal support to:
- Provide high-level guidance on Impact governance best practices.
- Supporting local lawyers and strengthening Impact focussed legal capacity in African jurisdictions.
- Anticipating any governance challenges and embedding inclusive, impact-focused governance practices.
- Developing a publicly available governance toolkit that will serve as a broader resource across the continent.
The Opportunity for GAIL Members
For GAIL members, this project is an opportunity to:
- Engage directly with Impact related governance considerations in diverse African contexts.
- Collaborate with peers across jurisdictions and contribute to cross-continental solutions.
- Build capacity by mentoring local lawyers and embedding best practices.
- Strengthen credentials by visibly contributing to a system-shaping initiative.
If you’re a GAIL member interested in knowing more or would like to be involved, please contact projects@gailnet.org.
Why This Matters for the Impact Ecosystem
Good governance is the backbone of sustainable impact. This project contributes to:
- Stronger institutions across the African impact investing ecosystem.
- Greater trust and credibility with investors, governments, and communities.
- A foundation for scaling impact finance that benefits people and planet.
This partnership reflects GAIL’s mission to embed impact at the heart of legal practice worldwide, and showcases how lawyers can play a catalytic role in shaping the systems that enable just and sustainable economies.
