Issue 73 – April – June 2025, Africa In Fact

This week [10 April 2025] dozens of people died in floods in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), thanks to torrential rains that have overwhelmed this megacity of 17 million (or plus) people.

The deep irony of this tragic situation is starkly illustrated in the latest issue of Africa in Fact, published today, which focuses on the future of African cities.

Susan Russell – Editor, Africa in Fact

The last time Africa in Fact focused on cities was six years ago—a period during which both the continent and the world have experienced significant transformation. Today, African cities are expanding at an extraordinary pace, outstripping the capacity of governments to respond effectively, due to a range of challenges. With Africa’s population of 1.3 billion expected to double by 2050, and 70% of that growth occurring in urban areas, our cities are now among the fastest growing globally.

This edition of Africa in Fact showcases ongoing research from GGA’s Governance Insights and Analytics programme, specifically the African Cities Profiling Project. This initiative is designed to offer a deep and nuanced understanding of the forces shaping major cities in sub-Saharan Africa. The project’s first phase focuses on profiling 10 cities within the SADC region (you can find details in this issue), with a long-term objective of covering 30 cities across the continent.
