From green and sustainable finance transactions to advising on climate-related regulations, lawyers have a key role to play in fostering climate risk management and the just transition to sustainable low carbon Asia-Pacific economies. 

In collaboration with LITE Lab@HKU x TCLP Climate Contracting Initiative, GAIL APAC is organising this in-person roundtable to highlight its recently published “Unlocking the Legal Pathways for Blended Finance” report, in particular its Asia chapter and case studies, together with a spotlight on recent initiatives to develop green legal documentation in Singapore, Hong Kong and beyond. This is especially timely in light of the Singapore government’s policy support for blended finance.

Brian W Tang

Founding Executive Director, LITE Lab at Hong Kong University

Brian W Tang is an innovator, ecosystem builder and educator at the confluence of law, technology, finance and social impact who has held senior leadership roles across three continents in global investment banking, international law firms and now a leading university.  Brian is founding executive director of LITE Lab@HKU, an award-winning interdisciplinary and experiential programme that fosters law, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship (LITE) at University of Hong Kong.  LITE Lab’s students have co-designed techlaw4good projects with NGOs and social entrepreneurs, won international competitions (Georgetown Law’s Iron Tech Lawyer Invitational; Baker McKenzie Boost Legal Innovation) and published white papers (Our Changing Climate: Applying Regtech to Green Finance).


Brian is co-chair of Asia-Pacific Legal Innovation and Technology Association (ALITA) and board member and founding Regtech Committee co-chair of Fintech Association of Hong Kong, co-leads EDM Council’s APAC ESG Working Group and organized Hong Kong’s first legal hackathon (Global Legal Hackathon Access to Justice Winner) . Brian spent nearly 20 years at Credit Suisse (Hong Kong), Sullivan & Cromwell (New York) and Mallesons (Perth), where he advised on some of the world’s largest and first-ever capital markets and M&A deals, and project and micro financings, and co-chaired Credit Suisse’s Hong Kong Charity Committee.

Vivien Teu

Partner, Head of Asset Management & ESG, Dentons Hong Kong

Vivien is a partner and head of Asset Management & ESG at Dentons Hong Kong. She has more than 20 years’ experience with a deep and broad focus in the areas of asset management, diverse forms of investment funds across asset classes and structures, retail funds and privately placed funds, investments in public markets, private equity, real estate and alternative investments. Vivien also has extensive corporate and commercial experience in the financial institutions and financial services sectors, having advised on numerous strategic joint ventures, inbound and outbound mergers & acquisitions, and related legal and regulatory matters for cross-border financial markets access, investments and platform building. 

 

In recent years, Vivien is market-leading in having developed a unique focus in her practice on corporate and regulatory issues around environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG), sustainable finance, responsible investment, impact investing and social finance. Throughout her career, Vivien has been involved in many pioneering transactions and projects. Most recently, Vivien was named Thought Leader of the Year, North Asia at the ALB Women in Law Awards 2021. She has also received commendations by Asialaw profiles for three consecutive years (2018 to 2020) as a leading lawyer for the practice areas of investment funds and corporate M&A, and is listed by China Business Law Journal in the 2020 and 2021 A-List Elite 100 foreign lawyers for China practice.
