GAIL Members’ Day: Impact in Changing Times | 15 October 2026 | London

How can lawyers use their expertise, influence and collective action to help accelerate positive systems change?

At GAIL Members’ Day in London, members are coming together for an interactive workshop exploring how legal expertise and collaboration could help unlock positive tipping points across a range of social, environmental and economic challenges.

Rather than starting with the barriers to change, the workshop invites participants to consider ambitious future states and work backwards to identify where lawyers could help bring them about.

Exploring possible future states

Working in small groups, participants will explore eleven potential future states:

  1. Children are prioritised in systems design.
  2. There is no market for unethical commodity supply.
  3. Climate resilience is built into governance.
  4. The African investment gap is closed.
  5. Sustainable technologies are affordable and accessible for all.
  6. Waste reaches zero.
  7. Fiduciaries must transparently account for long-term climate risks as part of annual reporting.
  8. Adjustments necessary for equality across genders are incorporated into design.
  9. Nature is considered on an equal footing with people.
  10. Investors can ensure positive impacts are protected when exiting investments.
  11. Financial investments transform full ecosystems and supply chains, rather than only one piece of the puzzle.

Through these discussions, participants will consider how legal frameworks, professional practice and collaboration across jurisdictions might help accelerate progress towards these outcomes.

Taking the conversation forward

The workshop is part of GAIL’s work enabling members to collaborate on substantive challenges and use their collective expertise to create systemic impact.

The discussions are intended to provide a starting point for further exchange, identifying ideas and opportunities that members may wish to develop together.

GAIL members will be able to follow the emerging outputs of the workshop, access shared resources and continue the conversation through our membership platform, Mighty Networks.

For GAIL members: Contribute to the discussion

We encourage members who attended the workshop, as well as those who were unable to join us in London, to explore the outputs, share their perspectives and indicate where they would be interested in contributing to emerging workstreams.

The next steps will be informed by these discussions and members’ interest in taking particular ideas forward.
