GAIL Member Drop-In: AI and Access to Justice

6 May 2026 | Online

GAIL UK hosted an interactive member drop-in exploring the opportunities and challenges artificial intelligence presents for access to justice.

The session featured insights from Raj Panasar and Sebastian Jenks from LawFairy on the development of legal technology tools designed to support complex legal and compliance workflows, including work helping undocumented children in the UK navigate British nationality registration.

Discussion focused on the distinction between probabilistic AI models and deterministic legal logic, the risks of hallucinations in large language models, and the importance of human oversight in high-stakes legal contexts. Members also explored wider questions around AI governance, environmental impact, and the growing use of AI-generated claims within legal systems.

Key Takeaways

  1. Deterministic legal logic can provide more reliable outcomes than probabilistic AI models in high-stakes legal decision-making.
  2. Large language models remain vulnerable to hallucinations and require careful human oversight.
  3. AI tools have significant potential to widen access to justice when deployed responsibly and for clearly defined use cases.
  4. Members discussed growing concerns around “AI slop” and the impact of low-quality AI-generated claims on courts and tribunals.
  5. There is increasing demand within the impact law community for practical AI governance frameworks and shared policy approaches.
  6. Current legal AI products remain largely lawyer-facing, highlighting opportunities to develop tools that better serve end-users and litigants in person.

The session concluded with a discussion of potential future GAIL initiatives in the AI space and strong member interest in developing shared approaches to responsible AI adoption within impact-focused organisations.

With thanks to Fenella Chambers for chairing the session, and to all GAIL members who participated.
